Top-Ranked Stanford Cruises To 6-1 Win Over Fresno State

Stanford, Calif. - The No.1 ranked Stanford women's tennis team opened its defense for their third consecutive title on Saturday with a 6-1 win over 26th-ranked Fresno State at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Cardinal captured the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches in their first dual meet of the 2003 season.
Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) picked up an 8-2 win at the top doubles position over Lucia Tallo and Lucia Sainz. Stanford's No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK) and Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) defeated Fresno State's Chloe Carlotti and Kathrin Winterhalter 8-3 to take the point.
In singles action, Barnikow, Burdette, Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH) and Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, WA) all picked up straight set wins. Barnikow, at the No. 2 position, defeated Vlatka Jovanovic 6-3, 6-2, while Burdette (No. 3) cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sainz. Anderson handled Winterhalter 6-1, 7-6(4) at the fifth spot and Tweedie-Yates was victorious at No. 6, recording a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kristy McRae.
Barnes survived a tough three-set battle over Tallo at No. 4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Liu dropped a tough match in the top singles position, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, to Fresno's Carlotti.
Stanford, now 1-0, will travel to Madison, Wis., to compete in the National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 6-9.
