Arizona Men's Tennis Defeats USD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 62 Arizona men's tennis team defeated No. 48 San Diego Saturday, 4-3. Arizona lost the doubles point but earned four singles points to win the match. The Wildcats handed the Toreros its first loss of the season.
In doubles action, Arizona's No. 1 team of junior Carl Hagman and sophomore Paul Warkentin fell to Jason Ponqsrikul and Nic Beuque, 9-8 (11). In the No. 2 slot, Rob Blair and Pierrick Ysern of USD defeated junior Whi Kim and freshman Daniel Andrus, 8-3. Sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshman Roger Matalonga beat Mirza Koristovic and Nic Caldwell in the No. 3 position, 8-4.
The Wildcats were able to win the match on the strength of its singles play as the squad won four of the six matches. Kim led the way by defeating Blair in the No. 1 slot, 6-3, 6-4. O'Grady also earned a point in the No. 4 position by defeating Beuque, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the No. 5 position Andrus defeated Koristovic in straight sets, 6-5, 6-5. Matalonga beat Nic Schaffner in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-0.
The Wildcats will be in action again later this afternoon when Arizona faces San Diego State, in San Diego, Calif., at noon.
