No. 13 Softball Run Rules UTSA, 9-1, In Five Innings
Feb. 2, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State freshman pitcher Desiree Serrano struckout 11 batters and had a no hitter through four innings as she helped the 13th-ranked Sun Devils (3-0) run rule Texas-San Antonio (0-3), 9-1, in five innings today at Farrington Stadium. Serrano (1-0) struckout nine of the first 12 batters, allowing only three hits and one run.
The Devils jumped all over UTSA starting pitcher Diana Castaneda (0-1) with four runs in the first. Valerie Sevilla opened the inning with an infield hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristin Farber. Sevilla then went to third on a wild pitch. Phelan Wright then hit her first home run of the year over the left centerfield wall for the 2-0 lead. Cheryl Evans then stepped to the plate and hammered a solo home run over the left field scoreboard that was estimated at 250 feet for a 3-0 advantage. After back to back singles by Adriana Garcia and Carla Strege, Joy Hull reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Garcia from second for the fourth run.
After being held scoreless for the next two innings, ASU then scored five more times in the fourth inning. Sevilla opened with a walk and advanced to second on another wild pitch. After Farber and Kara Brun both lined out hard, Wright singled to leftfield, scoring Sevilla. Evans then hit the second of her two home runs on the day, this time a two-run shot over the 225-foot fence in right centerfield. Hull, who was making her first start, doubled in one more run and then scored herself on a wild pitch.
The Roadrunners would then break up Serrano's no hitter in the fifth inning when Jessica Rogers hit a solo homerun to right field that just got over the wall. Serrano then fanned the final batter to post her 11th strikeout of the game.
Wright, Evans, Garcia and Strege all had two hits with Wright and Evans knocking in three RBIs apiece, while Hull tallied two RBIs.
Up next Arizona State hosts their annual 17-team Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Friday, February 7 through Sunday the 9th at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex and Farrington Stadium.
