Feb. 2, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Keira Goerl struck out seven without issuing a walk on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium as UCLA won the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. The Bruins had a 3-1 overall record for the weekend, and were followed in the tournament standings by No. 10 Cal State Fullerton (2-1), No. 22 Alabama (3-2), Cal State Northridge (1-2) and Loyola Marymount (0-3). In other Sunday action at the Winsberg Tournament, Alabama defeated Loyola Marymount 7-4, and Cal State Northridge put together a three-run bottom of the seventh inning to defeat LMU 3-2.
The Bruins batted as the visiting team in their contest, and started quickly with a bunt single by Natasha Watley, followed by a successful sacrifice bunt by Monique Mejia and an RBI single to right by junior center fielder Stephanie Ramos.
From that point on, junior pitcher Keira Goerl took control of the game, allowing one base runner in the first inning before retiring 13 consecutive batters. A second hit off the bat of CSUN's Sondra Milchiker nearly fell in shallow center field in the fourth inning, but a diving catch by Ramos recorded the second out of the inning.
Goerl would not strike out a batter until the fourth inning, but K'd six of the final nine Matadors to step to the plate. She did not walk a batter in the game, and surrendered just two hits on the afternoon.
UCLA scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. The rally started when Watley reached base on a fielders choice, advanced to second on a walk to Monique Mejia, and scored on a single to left by Ramos. That was all the offense Goerl would need en route to her third pitching victory of the season.
UCLA returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, February 5, with a doubleheader at UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
