CU To Celebrate NGWSD Wednesday

Feb 3, 2003

Boulder - The University of Colorado will celebrate the 17th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Wednesday, February 5 at the Colorado vs. Kansas women's basketball game at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center.

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Wednesday's game will be "Take A Kid To The Game" night, with all youth 18-and-under receiving free admission to the contest. The first 500 kids to the Coors Events Center will receive a free CU PowerBar tee shirt.

"National Girls and Women In Sports Day recognizes all of our young athletes," said CU women's basketball head coach Ceal Barry. "Most kids aspire to play collegiate sports one day, for their favorite team. We invite every young athlete to watch Big 12 women's basketball at it's finest when we host Kansas on Wednesday."

"Succeed in Sports, Lead in Life" is the theme for the 17th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration to be held in Washington, D.C., and across the country. This day, established in 1987, calls attention to the positive influence of sports and fitness participation and advances the struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

NGWSD presents a prime opportunity to communicate to others what Title IX has accomplished and how many girls and women it truly helps. In addition to the national celebration in Washington, D.C., all 50 states will hold events to mark the day.

NGWSD is organized jointly by Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, the Women's Sports Foundation and the YWCA of the USA. Together these organizations reach more than 50 million girls and women nationwide.
