Mendiola Named Pac-10 Player Of The Week

Feb. 3, 2003

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Washington junior guard Giuliana Mendiola has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Mendiola, from Lake Forest, Calif., led the 25th-ranked Huskies to a home sweep of the L.A. schools, averaging a near triple-double of 32.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.0 steals. On the weekend, she shot a combined 72.7 percent from the field (24-of-33), 58.3 percent from 3-point range (7-of-12) and 90.9 percent from the line (10-of-11).

In the 111-77 win over UCLA (Feb. 1), Mendiola scored a school-record 43 points, adding a career-high tying 12 rebounds and seven assists. She became the first-ever Husky to score 40 at least points in a game, surpassing the mark of 39 points set by Shaunda Greene (Nov. 30, 1991). Mendiola was 6-of-9 (.667) from beyond the arc, helping UW to a school single-game record of 60.0 percent 3-point field goal shooting (15-of-25). She also made 7-of-8 foul shots. Mendiola accounted for more than one-third of Washington's 111 points, a mark which broke the school's Pac-10 single-game scoring record. It was just three points shy of the school overall record.

Two days earlier, Mendiola paced Washington with 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 94-76 win over USC. She was 9-of-13 from the field (.692), 1-of-3 from long range and made all three of her free throw attempts.

Washington (17-3 overall, 9-2 Pac-10) enters the week in second place in the Conference standings and travels to the desert for games at Arizona (Thursday) and Arizona State (Saturday). The Huskies received their first ranking of the 2002-03 season in the Jan. 27 Associated Press poll, debuting at No. 25.

The Player of the Week honor is the third for Mendiola, her second this season and the 20th all-time selection for the Huskies.
