No. 2 Softball Travels to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl Tournament

Next Up for the Cats

The No. 2 softball team (5-0) travels up to Phoenix, Ariz. for the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Arizona State. On Friday, Feb. 7, the Cats face No. 24 Texas A&M (0-0) at 3:30 p.m. and SW Texas State (3-2) at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 8, Arizona faces Iowa State (0-0) at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin (0-0) at 1:30 p.m. Finally on Sunday, Feb. 9, the Wildcats will take on Mississippi State (0-0) at 10 a.m.

Directions to the complex: Coming from ASU's Farrington Stadium turn north on Rural Road. Take the 202 West. Take the 202 to Hwy 17 north. After several miles on Hwy 17, take the Dunlap exit east (right). Turn north (left) at 25th Ave. The Rose Mofford Sports Complex is on the right within a mile. Parking is free and the gate entrance is on the west side of the softball field complex.

USF-Louisville Slugger Tournament

The No. 2 softball team ended their first tournament of the season with a 5-0 record. On Friday, Arizona faced Sam Houston State and won 6-0. Senior Lovie Jung hit a home run and junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a grand slam. Jung hit her second home run of the day against Florida Atlantic, to help the Cats to a 2-0 win. On Saturday against Auburn, freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell led the Cats to a 6-0 victory with a one-hitter. Arizona gave up its only run of the weekend when they faced host school South Florida on Saturday. The Cats beat the Bulls 3-1. In the final game of the weekend, Arizona faced Northwestern and walked away with a 6-0 victory.

Scouting the Pitching

In their first weekend of competition, Arizona pitchers combined for a 0.20 ERA. Hollowell ended the weekend with a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. She had two shutouts. In 21 innings pitched, Hollowell struck out 33 batters, walked one and allowed five hits. Hollowell had a one-hitter against Auburn. Junior transfer Wendy Allen ended with a 2-0 record and a 0.54 ERA. In 13 innings pitched, Allen struck out 12 batters, walked two and gave up 6 hits.

Gotta Love It

Senior Lovie Jung had an impressive weekend. Jung ended the weekend with a team high .467 batting average. In 15 at-bats, Jung had 4 runs, 7 hits, two doubles and one triple. Jung hit two home runs and had seven RBI.

The Coach

Arizona's Mike Candrea carries a career record of 931-184 (.835), accomplished in 17 years with the Wildcats. The 2002 Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year has led UA to six national titles and six Pacific-10 Conference championships. Last season he became only the third Division I coach in history to win 900 games. During his tenure, Wildcat student-athletes have won the Honda Softball Award fives times (Susie Parra-1994, Jenny Dalton-1996, Nancy Evans-1998, Jennie Finch-2001, 2002). Candrea's Arizona teams have played in 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 15 consecutive College World Series. Last season, Candrea's team made it to the College World Series Championship game before losing to California, 6-0. Candrea is joined by assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Larry Ray.

Hillenbrand Stadium

UA's home field, Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium, has been a friendly place for the Cats to play. UA carries a record of 310-18 in the ballpark. The Cats had an average attendance of 1,755 and drew in a total of 49,140 in 2002. Arizona set an attendance record of 3,161 fans on April 9, 2002 against UCLA. Arizona had a three-season 70-game home winning streak snapped by UCLA on April 7, 2002.

The Rankings

Arizona is ranked No. 2 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll. Four Pac-10 schools are ranked in the Top 5. Seven of the eight Pac-10 softball teams are ranked in the Top 25.

Scouting the Newcomers

With six newcomers on the team, every game is a learning experience. Freshman outfielder Autumn Champion's had a .389 batting average, second behind Jung's. Champion started all five games in the outfield. She had five runs, seven hits and two RBI. Champion also had a 1.000 fielding percentage. Junior Wendy Allen had a .385 batting average. She had three runs, five hits, one home run and one RBI. When she wasn't pitching, Allen was the designated player. Freshman Shelly Schultz played first base for the Cats and had a .214 batting average.

UA Softball Notes

Arizona outscored their opponents 23-1... Opposing batting average against Alicia Hollowell is 0.76 and .122 against Wendy Allen... Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a grand slam against Sam Houston, she hit three last season... Sophomore Jackie Coburn has a 1.000 batting average when she's the leadoff batter... Lovie Jung has a .429 batting average when runners are in scoring position... Lovie Jung had three multiple hit games... Mackenzie Vandergeest had a team high 43 putouts, all on strikeouts...
