No. 7 Bruins Travel to Wisconsin for National Team Indoors

The No. 7 UCLA Women's Tennis team will travel to Madison, WI, this week to compete in the USTA/ITA Indoor Team Championships. Bruins Split with UCI, USC . . .
The Bruins defeated UC Irvine 7-0 on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the LATC, but fell to visiting USC 4-3 on Friday. Against Irvine, Susi Wild turned in the most impressive performance of the afternoon, defeating UCI's Christie Posner, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 6-ranked Sara Walker dropped just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over UCI's Jenny Bowman. On Friday versus USC, the Bruins knocked off three of the Trojans' four ranked singles players. Walker defeated national No. 3 Jewel Peterson 6-2, 6-7(4), (10-7), while freshman Laura Gordon defeated 90th-ranked Tiffany Brymer 7-6(7), 6-1, and sophomore Sarah Gregg defeated 103rd-ranked Anita Loyola 5-7, 6-2, (10-2). Friday's match with the Trojans did not count toward the Pac-10 standings, though the March 5 match at USC will.
UCLA Holds Serve in ITA Top-25 Rankings . . .
The Bruins remained in the 7th spot in the ITA's Top-25, released January 29. The Bruins have seven matches remaining with top-10 opponents, including two each with Stanford, Arizona State, and Cal, plus one more meeting with USC. New team rankings will come out Feb. 5, while new individual rankings will appear Feb. 26. UCLA senior Sara Walker is currently at No. 6, while Bruin freshman Jackie Carleton stands at No. 84.

Stella Sampras Webster Approaches 100th Win . . .
UCLA's win over Irvine was the 99th of head coach Stella Sampras Webster's career. Her 100th could come at the USTA/ITA Team Indoor events this week. In her first six seasons, she guided the Bruins to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three top-5 showings (1997, 2000, and 2002). In 2000, she was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. The former Stella Sampras married Steve Webster on January 3, 2003.
