UCLA Swimming and Diving Takes Week Break

In the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll (as of Jan. 30), UCLA (5-3, 2-3 Pac-10) is ranked No. 12 in the nation.
The Bruins will resume Pac-10 competition February 15 against cross-town rival USC at the McDonald Swim Stadium.
This past weekend, the Bruins faced the Stanford Cardinal and California Golden Bears in the Bay Area. UCLA lost both meets, losing to the Cardinal 158-141 and the Golden Bears 157.5-142.5
On the weekend, the Bruins received strong individual performances from freshman Kim Vandenberg, juniors Sara Platzer and Malin Svahnstrom and senior Regan Gosnell. Vandenberg was victorious in three events, winning the 100 and 200 Fly against Stanford (55.11 and 1:58.17) and the 200 Fly against Cal (1:58.62). Svahnstrom won the 200 Free at Stanford (1:49.68) and tied for first in the 200 IM at Cal (2:03.65). Platzer was victorious in the 50 Free at Stanford and Cal, winning in 23.25 against Stanford and 23.23 against Cal.
In diving, senior Regan Gosnell placed third on three-meter and fourht on one-meter against Stanford. Against Cal, she won both the one- and three-meter springboard.
Coach Cyndi Gallagher has had four Bruins swim qualifying times for the NCAA Championships (March 20-22). In addition to the automatic qualifiers, 11 individuals and two relay squads have provisionally qualified. Listed below are the Bruins' NCAA qualifiers.

National Letters of Intent
During the fall signing period, three recruits signed National Letters of Intent to join the Bruins.
Jeana Fuccillo (Lebanon, IL/Althoff Catholic HS), Katie Nelson (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Peninsula HS) and Amy Thurman (Orinda, CA/Miramonte HS) will enter as true freshman in fall 2003.
The Bruins will wrap up Pac-10 competition Saturday, February 15, against the USC Trojans. The meet will be held at the McDonald Swim Stadium, located on the USC campus, beginning at 1:00 PM.
The Pac-10 Championships will take place Thursday through Saturday, February 27 to March 1, in Federal Way, WA.
