Feb. 4, 2003
WHAT'S ON TAP: The No. 10 California women's tennis team (2-0) has been selected as one of 16 teams to compete in the prestigious 2003 USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 6-9 at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The Bears last participated in this event in 2000, advancing to the finals against Stanford.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA: The Bears enter the tournament with a record of 2-0 and will face No. 14 William & Mary in the first round Thursday, Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m. (PST). If Cal wins that match, it will face either top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Stanford, or the tournament host, No. 30 Wisconsin, in the quarterfinals. Losing teams will enter the consolation bracket and all teams are guaranteed to play at least three matches at the event.
ABOUT THE TEAM INDOORS: The USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship is billed as the nation's premier indoor tennis tournament. This event, which usually serves as a sneak preview to the season-ending NCAA Championships in May, began in 1988 and has been hosted by the University of Wisconsin each year. The 2003 field consists of some of the best collegiate teams in the country, including 12 teams ranked in the nation's Top 16. In the tournament's history, Stanford and Florida have each won a record six USTA/ITA titles while Georgia is the only other school to win this event, emerging victorious three times.
BEARS IN THE INDOOR TOURNEY: In 2000, the last time the Bears participated in the Indoor Team Championships, Cal advanced to the title match vs. Stanford. The Golden Bears defeated No. 49 Wisconsin, 6-1, in the first round, No. 7 Duke, 7-1, in the quarterfinals and No. 9 Wake Forest, 5-4, in the semifinals. Making its first national title appearance in school history, the Bears could not outlast the Cardinal in the title match, falling to the top-ranked team, 8-0, giving Stanford their fifth National Team Indoor Title since 1988.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: In addition to the No. 10 team ranking, four singles players and one doubles tandem also garnered national attention. Junior Raquel Kops-Jones enters the season ranked No. 12, while senior captain Christina Fusano is No. 34, junior Catherine Lynch is No. 46 and junior Jieun Jacobs claims No. 54. Defending Pac-10 doubles champions, Kops-Jones and Fusano, check in at No. 4 in the nation.
