Feb. 5, 2003
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Oregon wrestling team lost to Cal Poly in a close dual Wednesday evening, 22-15, at the Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Ducks (6-9, 5-3) led 15-6 with four matches remaining, but were unable to hold on to the lead.
'We wrestled tough,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'The guys that competed tonight did a good job of competing.'
The dual began at 133, with Cal Poly's Nate Ybarra defeating Jacob Boyles, 12-5. Boyles, a redshirt freshman from Lowell, Ore., filled in for Jason Harless at the weight class. Harless was not able to travel with the team due to a knee injury.
Seniors Casey Hunt and Tony Overstake scored a quick seven points for the Ducks by winning their two matches at 141 and 149 to get the lead back for the Ducks. Hunt, who pinned his opponent from Cal State Bakersfield, scored bonus points for the second time in as many matches on the day, this time with a major decision, 17-6. Overstake came back in his match to win by decision, 6-4.
Luke Larwin won at 165, 4-1, to give the Ducks a 10-6 lead. No. 11-ranked Shane Webster, who won by major decision earlier in the day, dominated once again at 174, winning by technical fall, 24-6 (5:50).
Unfortunately, the Ducks were unable to win any more matches on the night, with the Mustangs winning the overall dual, 22-15.
Oregon will wrestle Menlo College and Fresno State Friday in Fresno, Calif. The Menlo dual will begin at 3 p.m., with the Ducks wrestling Fresno State at 7 p.m.
