Golden Bears Down Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Amit Tamir scored 27 points, including 7-of-11 on 3-pointers as California defeated Oregon State 84-71 Thursday.

Joe Shipp added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears (15-4, 8-2).

Oregon State (11-8, 4-6) was led by Philip Ricci's 16 points and six rebounds and Jimmie Haywood's 13 points. The loss snapped the Beavers' four game conference winning streak.

Cal jumped out to an early 14-3 lead. But Oregon State got as close as 34-28 before Cal took a 38-30 advantage into halftime. Tamir was 6-of-7 on 3-pointers and had 18 points in the first half.

Brian Wethers hit three quick baskets and Shipp added two in a row and the Golden Bears led 50-32 at 16:18. Cal led briefly by 20, making it 74-54 on a putback by Gabriel Hughes. The Beavers cut the lead to 81-69 at 1:00.

Cal ended a two-game losing streak, losing at Arizona and Arizona State last weekend. The Golden Bears have won eight straight over the Beavers.
