Feb. 6, 2003

Madison, Wis. - The California women's tennis (3-0) team advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships with its 7-0 victory over No. 14 William & Mary (4-2) this afternoon, Feb. 6, at A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The win sets up a cross-bay conference duel, as Cal and Stanford square off in a quarterfinal matchup at 1:30 p.m. (PST) Friday, Feb. 7.

The top eight seeds advanced this afternoon, including Pac-10 rivals sixth-seeded USC and seventh-seeded UCLA.

Against the Tribe this afternoon, Cal took an early 1-0 lead after taking two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. For the third consecutive time, the Bears' top tandem of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano proved why they are the No. 4-ranked duo in the nation, making quick work of William & Mary's 40th-ranked Candice Fuchs and Megan Muth, 8-6, to improve to 3-0 on the year. Catherine Lynch and Nicole Havlicek also continued their winning trend, improving to 2-0 on the season with an 8-2 stomping of Kate Boomershine and Lingda Yang.

Cal was able to sustain its momentum in singles play, recording wins in all six matches. No. 54 junior Jieun Jacobs got things started on court No. 4, with her 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 113 Nina Kamp to give Cal the early 2-0 lead. Most impressive was Jody Scheldt on singles No. 6, claiming the win, after losing the first set and winning a tiebreaker in the second, to take the three-set victory over Kari Olsen. Senior captain No. 34 Christina Fusano secured the win for the Bears with her three set victory over No. 52 Megan Muth on singles No. 2. Kops-Jones, the highest ranked of the Bears at No.12 in the nation, eased past the Tribe's top player, No. 40 Fuchs, with a straight set 6-4, 6-3 victory. No. 46 Lynch and junior Havlicek were the last off the courts, both taking victories over their respective opponents to give Cal the clean 7-0 sweep.

With its first round victory, Cal improves to 6-4 all-time in the opening round of play at the Team Indoor Championships. William & Mary falls to 2-8 all-time in the first round.

The Bears challenge top-ranked Stanford in the quarterfinals tomorrow, Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m. (PST). In 2000, the last time the two teams met in this tournament, the Cardinal defeated the Bears, 8-0, in the championship match.
