Feb. 7, 2003
Pocatello, Idaho - University of Oregon junior Abby Andrus scored 3,598 points en route to a fourth-place finish Friday evening at the Mountain State Games pentathlon, her first ever multi-event competition as a Duck.
Andrus was the lone Duck competitor in the meet, hosted by Idaho State University and held at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho. Unattached entrant and former two-time NCAA champion Tiffany Hogan ran away with top honors, scoring 4,192 points.
In the opening event, the 60-meter hurdles, Andrus clocked 9.22 seconds, good for fifth in the event, while Hogan won easily in 8.18. Jackie Poulson of host Idaho State won the competition's second event, the high jump, with a leap of 5-7 1/4 (1.71m), while Andrus cleared (5-3 3/4 (1.62m), a personal best, for third place. In her weakest event, the shot put, Andrus managed a 13th place finish, with a toss of 29-4 (8.94m). Tiffany Hogan was the victor again, with a winning throw of 5.88 meters. In the fourth and final field event of the competition, the long jump, Andrus placed fourth with a leap of 17-9 1/4 (5.42m), while Hogan jumped 19-3 1/2 (5.88m) for yet another win. Andrus picked up her first win of the competition in the evening's final event, and the sole track race, the 800 meters. Her winning time of 2:18.98 was almost seven seconds ahead of her closest pursuer, Poulson of Idaho State.
The Mountain State Games continue tomorrow at the Holt Arena, with the first event getting underway at 9:00 a.m., but Andrus is not scheduled to compete. The Duck women resume competition next Saturday, February 15, in Seattle, Washington, at the University of Washington Invitational, with competition starting at 9:00 a.m.
