Huskies Drop Baseball Opener To Pepperdine, 1-0
Feb. 7, 2003
MALIBU, Calif. - The Washington baseball team opened its 2003 season Friday with a 1-0 loss to Pepperdine at the Battle of the Beach tournament at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Both teams were playing their first games of the season.
As the score would indicate, the Huskies and Waves both got outstanding pitching performances from their starters. Washington's Sean White allowed only one run on a solo homer in the fifth. Pepperdine ace Brandon Boesch worked seven innings to pick up the victory while Steve Kleen threw the eighth and Kea Kometani struck out the side in order in the ninth to complete the shutout and earn the save.
Washington hadn't been shut out since the 2000 season.
Early scoring chances were limited for both teams. The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs in the first, but a Mike Wagner groundout ended the threat. In the fourth, Pepperdine put runners aboard at second and third with one out, but White got two groundouts back to the mound to complete the inning without any runs.
In the fifth inning, with two outs and none on, Waves shortstop Kevin Estrada, a senior transfer from the University of Florida, belted a line drive homer off of the scoreboard in right field to put Pepperdine ahead, 1-0.
White, a senior from Mercer Island, left the game after six innings, and suffered the loss. He allowed only three hits and one run while walking two and striking out five. He had finished the 2002 season on a six-game winning streak.
Washington out-hit the Waves, 5-4, but Pepperdine had two doubles and a homer among its four. Husky junior third baseman John Otness led the Huskies with two singles. No Pepperdine player had more than one hit in the game.
Saturday at 10 a.m., the Huskies face UC Santa Barbara on day two of the Battle at the Beach. The Gauchos (2-3) upset No. 11 Houston (0-1) in Friday's first game of the tournament, winning 4-2 in 12 innings.
