No. 10 Cal Wins Battle of the Bay, Edges No. 1 Stanford 4-3

Madison, Wis. - The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team completed one of its greatest victories ever, upsetting long time nemesis No. 1 Stanford, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships at A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The win sets up a semifinal showdown with No. 4 Duke Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m.

With the victory the Bears reach the USTA/ITA semis for the third time ever, and defeated the cross-bay rival for only the sixth time in 54 all-time meetings with the Cardinal. Its last win over Stanford came on Feb. 27, 1999. Cal improves to 4-0 on the year while Stanford falls to 3-1, and more importantly suffers only its second defeat in the last 62 matches.

The Bears kicked it into gear early, claiming the doubles point with wins on courts No. 2 and 3. Catherine Lynch and Nicole Havlicek improved to 3-0 on the year with their 8-5 victory over Emilia Anderson and Story Tweedie-Yates on court No. 3. On the second court, Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt turned in an 8-5 performance as well, defeating Alice Barnes and Amber Liu. In the battle of the Top 10s, the Bears fourth-ranked pair of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano took their first loss of the year with an 8-5 defeat at the hands of eighth-ranked Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette.

Cal carried the momentum onto the singles courts, taking a quick 2-0 lead as 12th-ranked Kops-Jones' made quick work of Stanford's top player No. 17 Amber Liu, 6-3, 6-2. The teams then traded victories until Stanford reeled off consecutive wins on courts two and four, tying the match at 3-3. Cal's No. 34 Fusano suffered her first loss of the year, falling 6-2, 6-2 to No. 25 Lauren Barnikow on court two. Jacobs followed suit with her first defeat as well, getting tripped-up by No. 13 Alice Barnes to tie the match. But the Bears persevered as Nicole Havlicek turned in a gritty performance on court No. 6 to hold off the Stanford rally, clinching the victory with her 7-5, 6-2 win over Tweedie-Yates.

The Bears return to action tomorrow, Feb. 8 in a semifinal matchup with No. 4 Duke at 1:30 p.m. Duke will be making its third straight USTA/ITA semifinal appearance and seventh in eight years.
