Feb. 8, 2003
TUCSON (AP) -- Arizona had 28 points from Shawntinice Polk, and Gov. Janet Napolitano was on the Wildcat bench as a 'guest coach', as the Wildcats logged a 80-50 victory over Washington State in front of 2,787 in McKale Center on Saturday.
Napolitano was given a tour of the school's athletics facilities, sat on the bench during the game and was in the locker room for pre-game, halftime and post-game talks by Arizona coach Joan Bonvicini.
The Wildcats (16-6, 9-4) have selected boosters to join the team as guest coaches for games during Bonvicini's 12-year Arizona career.
It was Polk who stole the limelight by scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds in the first half to help Arizona build a 40-24 halftime lead. The Wildcats were ahead 17-12 with 12:13 left in the first, when Polk scored eight straight Arizona points to create a nine-point lead.
Washington State (0-21, 0-13), which had its losing streak increase to 45, made only one field goal in the final 8:15 of the first half.
Polk made 8-of-12 field goal attempts by halftime and finished with 12-of- 16 shooting, while also grabbing 12 rebounds for her school-record 16th double-double of the season.
Washington State was led by 12 points apiece from Jami Clevenger and Emma Joneby. Sarah Barrett added 11.
The Wildcats never let their lead slip away in the second half as two free throws by Polk with 15:55 remaining put Arizona ahead, 53-26.
