Buffs Upset No. 46 Minnesota, 4-3

WESTMINSTER - Junior Morgan Sall won her 11th singles match of the year taking a three-set win at No. 5 singles helping No. 63 ranked Colorado Buffaloes to a 4-3 upset win over No. 46 Minnesota, Saturday afternoon at the Ranch Country Club Tennis Courts.

Sall evened her spring record at 2-2, however won her 11th match of the year defeating Nischela Reddy, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 5 singles giving CU its fourth win in five matches this spring. The Golden Gophers dropped their first match of the season falling to 2-1.

Colorado started the day taking the doubles point winning two of three matches. Seniors Dominique Lemperle and Lia Dimingo won their first doubles match of the spring in three tries defeating Angela Buergis and Valerie Vladea, 9-8(6) at No. 1 doubles. CU claimed the deciding doubles point at No. 3 with Katherine Lutgert and Jenny Hanson teaming up for the first time, 8-6.

With a 1-0 lead, Colorado increased its margin with singles wins at No. 1 and No. 4. Lemperle remained unbeaten at the top singles slot in three attempts this season winning 6-3, 6-4 while Strandemo won for the fourth time in five tries, 7-5, 6-1.

Minnesota rallied taking the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 positions in straight-sets, leaving the match to be decided at No. 5 between Sall and Reddy.

"It was a great team effort," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It was fantastic that everyone had a great effort and fought for every point. Jenny (Hanson) and Kate (Lutgert) stepped up playing their first dual match of the spring. Both have been playing great in practice and they took control at No. 3."

Colorado returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 15 when the Buffs host No. 51 Oklahoma State to open the Big 12 Conference season. The match will played at the Harvest House (Millennium Hotel) beginning at 6 p.m.
