Cardinal Split In Day Two Of ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament

Phoenix, Ariz. - The Stanford softball team got shutout by 10th-ranked Cal State Fullerton 6-0, but bounced back to defeat SW Texas 11-0 in five innings in the second day of the 2003 ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament. The Cardinal stand at 4-2 overall, heading into their game with Texas Tech tomorrow in the final day of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
In game one, Fullerton pitcher Jodie Cox went the distance, striking out 10 Stanford hitters and holding the Cardinal to just one hit on the day as the Titans cruised, 6-0. Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) had Stanford's only hit in the game in the first inning.
Stanford changed things around in the nightcap, beating SW Texas in five innings 11-0. Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) highlighted the four-run first inning by blasting a grand slam. Ching also added a solo shot in the third to go up 5-0.
Ching and Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) added home runs in the Cardinal's six-run fifth inning to seal the 11-0 victory.
Senior Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) picked up her third win in three starts for the Cardinal, striking out four and allowing two hits in four innings of work. Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) relieved Nyberg in the fifth, striking out the side.
Brangham and Allister both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, while Ching was 2-for-4. Brangham and Ching each recorded three RBI for Stanford.
Stanford concludes play in the ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament tomorrow when they battle Texas Tech at 10 a.m.
