Men's Swimming, Diving Loses To Top-Ranked Stanford

Feb. 8, 2003

Senior Erik Vendt set a pool record in the 1650y free and also won the 200y breast, but it wasn't enough as Stanford's top-ranked men's swimming and diving team defeated No. 7 USC, 144-87, on Saturday (Feb. 8).

The Trojans fell to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford improved to 7-0, 3-0.

Vendt won the mile in 14:46.48, breaking the Stanford pool record of 14:50.58 set by Jeff Kostoff in 1984. Vendt later came back to win the 200y breast in 1:57.48 and took second in the 200y back with a season's best 1:46.90.

Freshman Ous Mellouli won the 500y free in 4:20.32 and freshman Mihaly Flaskay was second in the 200y breast in 2:04.14.

The Cardinal were too deep in the sprint events for the Trojans, going 1-2-3 in the 50y, 100y and 200y free. Stanford also set four pool records.
