No. 4 Duke Proves Too Much for No. 10 Cal in Semifinals, 4-1

Feb. 8, 2003

Madison, Wis. - With all six singles players and all three doubles tandems ranked in the Top 100, the Duke Blue Devils (7-0) proved to have too much firepower in handing California (4-1) its first loss of the season, 4-1, this afternoon in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships in Madison.

After winning the doubles point in the first four matches of the season en route to a 4-0 record, the Bears were handed their first doubles loss of the year, dropping two of the three matches. The No. 4-ranked duo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano returned to their winning ways after the loss yesterday vs. Stanford, defeating the 13th-ranked team of Kelly McCain and Sarah Adams on court one. After Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt got manhandled on court No. 2, Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch suffered their first loss of the year as No. 49 Katie Granson and Julia Smith clinched the doubles point for the Blue Devils.

The Bears fell into an even deeper hole when Duke's No. 98 Katie Granson ended Scheldt's seven-match winning streak, 6-0, 7-5, on court six, to give Duke the quick 2-0 lead. No. 54 Jieun Jacobs improved to 4-1 in dual action with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 65 Julia Smith to get Cal back into the match. But that was the only point that the Bears would get, dropping the next two singles matches for the loss. No. 12 Kops-Jones had her seven-match winning streak halted by the second-ranked player in the nation, No. 2 Kelly McCain and No. 34 Fusano lost her second straight, falling to No. 15 Amanda Johnson, 6-3, 7-5. Havlicek and Lynch halted their matches in progress as Duke had already claimed the 4-1 victory.

This was Cal's third time ever playing in the semifinals (1998, 2000), but has never won the title. The Bears fall to 17-15 all-time in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors.

Cal has a two-week break and returns to action Friday, Feb. 21 against Pepperdine. The Waves travel to Berkeley for the 1:30 p.m. matchup at Hellman Tennis Courts.
