No. 7 Stanford Wins Home Opener 5-2 over TCU

Stanford recorded its first win of the 2003 season as the No. 7 Cardinal built a 5-0 lead over TCU and breezed to a 5-2 victory in the home opener at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal, which opened the season on Feb. 1 with a 4-3 loss at Cal, is now 1-1 on the year while the Horned Frogs dropped to 4-2.
Led by seniors David Martin and Scott Lipsky, Stanford won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Martin and Lipsky defeated TCU's Alex Menichi and Fabrizio Sestini 8-4. Both Martin, who played No. 1 singles, and Lipsky, who played No. 2, won their singles matches as well.
Stanford's other two doubles team were victorious as well. The No. 2 doubles team of freshman James Pade and freshman K.C. Corkery beat Toni Gordon and Daniel Scholten 8-5 while the Cardinal's No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Sam Warburg and junior Carter Morris won their match 8-4.
In singles competition, Martin beat Sestini at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 while Lipsky beat Menichini at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-4. The Cardinal won at No. 3 singles with Pade recording another straight set win, 6-3, 7-6 over TCU's Gordon. The match was clinched for Stanford at No. 4 singles when Warburg beat Scholten 6-3, 6-3.
Stanford returns to action on Feb. 14 with a home match against U.C. Irvine at 1:30 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
