UA Men's Tennis Falls to BYU

TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 48 Arizona men's tennis fell to Brigham Young University on Saturday, 4-3, for their first loss of the season. The loss drops Arizona to 3-1. The Wildcats won the doubles point but only managed to win two singles matches.

In doubles action the tandem of sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshman Roger Matalonga defeated Alonso Medina and Jeff Olsen, 8-5. After falling behind 4-1, the pair rallied to win four of the next five points to take the match. Clinching the doubles point for Arizona was the team of junior Whi Kim and freshman Daniel Andrus, who beat Jose Luis Lechuga and Anton Rudjuk, 8-5. In the final match, junior Carl Hagman and sophomore Paul Warkentin fell to Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman, 9-7.

O'Grady finished the first singles match of the afternoon in the No. 4 position with a victory over Alonzo Medina, 6-2, 6-2. Matalong defeated Anton Rudjuk in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 position. BYU's Jeff Olsen beat Andrus in the No. 5 slot, 7-6 (9), 6-1, to give BYU their first point. Warkentin, playing in the No. 3 spot fell to Jose Luis Lechuga 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Playing in the No. 1 position, Kim fell to Erik Nyman, 6-3, 6-2. Carlos Lozano of BYU clinched the match by defeating Hagman in the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

The Wildcats will be in action again on Sunday, Feb. 9, when they host UC Santa Barbara. First serve is set for noon.
