No. 2 Softball Completes the Third Day of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament

Feb. 9, 2003

The No. 2 softball team (10-0) completed the third of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament with a 9-2 win over Mississippi State (3-4).

This game was sweet revenge for the Cats. Last year in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Mississippi State beat Arizona by a score of 1-7.

The Dogs jumped to an early 2-0 lead over the Cats. Arizona responded with seven unanswered runs.

Freshman Shelly Shultz had a two-run homer to tie the game in the fourth inning. The Cats had back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. Senior Lovie Jung hit a grand slam followed by junior Mackenzie Vandergeest.

Freshman Autumn Champion was 4-for-5 with three runs. Freshman Leslie Wolfe pitched the game for the Cats. Wolfe struck out five batters and gave up nine hits. She improves to 1-0 on the season.

The Cats continue action when they host the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic from Feb. 14-16.
