NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Behind the leadership of senior Brian Woolf, the University of Arizona men's golf junior varsity stands in second place Monday after the first round of the Anteater Invitational.
Woolf, who tallied a three-under-par 69, led a Wildcat effort that ranks second among 11 teams after 18 holes of play. Arizona's 291 (+3) total was five shots off the pace set by tournament-leader UC-Riverside at 286 (-2). Denver (292) stands in third place while UC-Irvine (297) rounds out the top four places.
In addition to Woolf, two other Arizona players rank in the tournament's top-10 places. Junior Nick Juszczak and sophomore Nathan Lashley are in a six-way tie for 10th place after each carded an opening-round 73 (+1). Also competing for the Wildcats is sophomore Kipp Riehle, who is tied for 28th place at 76 (+4), and freshman Zack Amole, who is tied for 38th place at 78 (+6).
Playing against varsity competition, the Arizona JV is seeking its second tournament victory in as many starts this season. The Cats also won the 49er Collegiate Classic on Nov. 1 in its other start this season.
The 54-hole tournament is being contested at Big Canyon Country Club, a par 72, 6,876-yard facility. The two-day event is hosted by UC-Irvine.
