No. 7 Sun Devil Gymnasts To Host No. 1-Ranked UCLA

This Week --Seventh-ranked Arizona State returns home following three straight weeks on the road on Sunday, February 16, versus No. 1 UCLA at 2:00 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. UCLA holds a slim lead in the all-time series with Arizona State at 17-16. ASU, however, holds an 11-4 winning margin over the Bruins at Wells Fargo Arena. Sunday's meet marks the sixth ranked opponent in 2003 for the Sun Devils, as they faced No. 8 Stanford at the Maui Invitational (1/3), No. 17 Washington (1/17), No. 5 Utah (1/24), No. 13 Arizona (1/31), No. 9 Oregon State (2/7) and No. 1 UCLA (2/16). Rankings this week are based on total season average scores through Feb. 10, 2003.
ASU In The Rankings --This week, based upon season average scores, ASU is No. 7 Arizona State debuted at No. 15 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released January 2. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the crown with 752 overall votes and 20 first-place bids. ASU received 333 overall votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 7 Stanford (570), No. 10 Arizona (444) and No. 13 Oregon State (355). Washington (17th, 268) rounded out the list of Pac-10 teams making the top-25. For a complete list of the current rankings see Page 2 of this release. Meet Highlights From 2003 --ASU-UA (1/31/03): Arizona State recorded its 7th-highest score in school history, defeating No. 13 Arizona, 196.950-196.175 in Tucson. The Sun Devils set a school record on bars with a 49.475. Junior Maggie Germaine tied her own school record (and career-high) in the all-around with a 39.625.ASU-Utah (1/24/03): Arizona State gave 23rd-year head coach John Spini his first road victory over the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, defeating the Utes 197.450-197.150 in front of 9,032 fans at the Huntsman Center. The loss marked the second home loss for Utah this year, which is only the second time that has happened in their 28-year history. It was ASU's first victory over Utah in Salt Lake City since 1976. ASU posted its third-highest team score ever en route to its fourth win of 2003.ASU-Washington (1/17/03): The Sun Devils opened the 2003 home season at Wells Fargo Arena versus Pac-10 foe No. 17 Washington and took first-place with a score of 197.300, the third-highest team score in school history at the time. Washington posted a 194.150. Sun Devil junior Maggie Germaine scored a school record and career-high all-around total of 39.625, placing first. She also scored a career-high 9.90 on beam, tied a career-high on floor (9.95) and set a season-high on vault (9.9). Senior Ashley Ellsberry tied a career-high with a 9.925 on floor and set career highs on vault (9.8) and bars (9.875). Sophomore Kari Muth set a career-high on beam (9.9) and tied a career best on bars (9.9). Freshman Ashley Kelly, only in her second ASU meet, posted career highs in all four events: vault (9.875), bars (9.9), beam (9.95) and floor (9.825).ASU-Maui Invitational (1/3/03): ASU defeated New Hampshire and San Jose State, but lost to Stanford (196.050-194.200). ASU's John Spini Looking For Home Win No. 150 --ASU head coach John Spini has 149 career victories at home, just one shy of No. 150. He will get that chance against top-ranked UCLA this Sunday, February 16 at 2 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
Sun Devils Hot In All-Around --Arizona State gymnasts have posted nine of the Top 19 all-Around scores in school history this season through five meets. Junior Maggie Germaine owns four of the scores, including the school record 39.625 on two occasions (vs. Washington 1/17/03 and Arizona 1/31/03). Senior Ashley Ellsberry holds three others while freshman Ashley Kelly has posted two.

Super Frosh Debut --Freshman Ashley Kelly (York, Pa.) recorded a 38.975 all-around score in her college debut at the Maui Invitational (1/3), which was the highest all-around total at ASU since Elizabeth Reid's 39.300 at the NCAA Super Six, April 23, 1999 (representing a span of 45 months or 37 actual meets). Had it not been for a -0.1 point reduction on the floor exercise, Kelly would have posted a 39.075. Kelly's Maui Invite scores: 9.750 (vault); 9.825 (bars); 9.825 (beam); and 9.575 (floor). Kelly backed up that performance by setting four career-highs versus Washington: vault (9.875), bars (9.9), beam (9.95) and floor (9.825). Her all-around score was also a career-high (39.550). Kelly recorded her lowest all-around score versus Utah (38.900). At Arizona, Kelly recorded the 14th-best all-around score of all-time at ASU with a 39.475. She tied for first on bars (9.950, a career-high) and placed second on beam (9.925).
