Top-Rated Arizona Women's Golf in Eighth Place After Day One of Regional Challenge
Feb. 10, 2003
PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- In its first action since November, Arizona's women's golf team shot 21-over-par 305 in the first round of the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge Monday at Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Wildcats stand tied for eighth place with two rounds remaining in the 54-hole tournament.
Erica Blasberg, top-rated in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, posted the best individual score for Arizona as she played the 5,912-yard course at par. The freshman from nearby Corona, Calif., made three birdies on the back nine to position herself in the tournament's top five after 18 holes. Blasberg is tied for fifth place, just three shots behind the tournament's individual leader.
Home cooking seemed to be the key ingredient for success Monday as three of the top four teams after Monday's opening round are from the greater Los Angeles area. Pepperdine holds the team lead as it shot even-par 284. UCLA trails the Waves at 8-over-par 292. Oklahoma State and Southern California are in third and fourth places, respectively. Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA is in first place individually after shooting a 3-under-par 68.
Also contributing to Arizona's youth movement Monday was sophomore Miriam Kraschinski, who stands tied for 21st as she shot 4-over-par 75. In four fall tournaments, Kraschinski posted her highest score in the first round of each event, a possible harbinger of lower scores in the remaining rounds.
Completing the Wildcats' lineup in Palos Verdes are the squad's three seniors. Julia Kraschinski shot 8-over 79 and is tied for 58th place. Laura Myerscough stands tied for 62nd place after carding a 9-over-par 80. Anne Lee, another Southern California native, is in 67th place with a first round of 10-over-par 81.
The tournament continues with 18 holes of action on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Arizona looks to claim the individual championship at the Regional Challenge for the third straight year and tries to win the team title for third time in four years.
