Jamie Dantzscher Named Pac-10 Gymnast Of The Week
Feb. 11, 2003
Walnut Creek, CA - UCLA junior Jamie Dantzscher (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) has been selected as the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week for Feb. 2-8.
Dantzscher, despite competing on an injured ankle, was 0.025 away from complete perfection this weekend, scoring three perfect 10s and a 9.975 in four routines against two Top 15 nationally-ranked opponents.
On Sunday afternoon, she led UCLA to a school record total of 198.575 against No. 13 Washington. The reigning Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year recorded perfect 10s on vault (her first 10 on vault this year) and on floor (her third 10 in four floor routines this year) and just missed out on a 10 on bars, scoring a 9.975 to tie for first place. Dantzscher's 10 on vault helped UCLA achieve a school-record tying team total of 49.7. UCLA's final team score is tied for the highest mark ever scored by in collegiate competition, matching Georgia's score set at the 1998 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
On Friday at eighth-ranked Stanford, Dantzscher competed on just one event due to the ankle injury (she had missed the previous week's meet entirely), but she made the most out of her one moment, scoring a perfect 10 on the uneven bars. Her score helped UCLA earn a team total of 197.45, the Bruins' second-highest road score of the season.
Dantzscher has been UCLA's most consistent athlete this year, scoring 9.9 or higher in 15 of 17 routines and scoring no lower than 9.825 on any routine. She has compiled six perfect 10s on the year, along with three 9.975s.
Dantzscher's honor is her first of the season and the fourth of her career. It is also the third by a Bruin this year.
