Matt Potter Joins Soccer Staff

Feb. 11, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Matt Potter, a veteran coach with the Sereno Soccer Club in Arizona and former player with the Watford Football Club in England, has joined the Washington State soccer staff, Head Coach Dan Tobias announced Tuesday.

'It would be an understatement to say we are excited to add Matt Potter to our staff,' Tobias said. 'It was a very difficult decision, but in a good way because we had excellent people to choose from. Matt's background is outstanding. You start with his playing background and his playing career in England, he obviously knows what it takes to compete and play at the highest level.'

Potter, a native of Mere, England, has spent the past eight years as a full-time professional with the Sereno Soccer Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. He guided nine teams to state championships, with one regional runner-up, and three regional third place teams.

'He has had a big impact in building a top club in Arizona, and has been an excellent coach for Region IV,' Tobias. 'He is an outstanding teacher and communicator. In watching him over the last couple of years, he is very good at helping players reach their potential, and sometimes even beyond that.'

Prior to coming to the United States, Potter put together a distinguished playing career. He played with the Watford Football Club, was a member of a British Colleges national title team, and represented England at the Under-19 International level. Potter also worked as a community director with the Brentford Football Club in London.

In 1993, he took a position with Noga Soccer in New York and Arizona, coordinating clinics and camps, coaching, and establishing and developing curriculum. He also served as a guest lecturer at local schools, community centers, and clubs.

A USSF 'A' licensed coach, Potter headed the Kachina Country Day School Physical Education Department, was a member of the Arizona State Association coaching staff, and is currently a staff coach for the Region IV Olympic Development Program.

Potter spent the fall of 2002 as the head coach at Scottsdale Community College.

'Matt has a very good personality that will fit nicely with our team, and also one that will compliment myself and our other assistant, Lisa Oyen,' Tobias said. 'We are excited Matt and his family are coming to WSU, and we have a lot to look forward to with him being an important part of our coaching staff and the Cougar family.'

Potter attained an honors degree in Physical Education and Religious, Social and Moral Education from West London, and earned the Preliminary and Teaching Awards from the English Football Association.

'I am grateful to WSU and Coach Tobias for the opportunity to be part of the soccer program here in Pullman,' Potter said. 'I look forward to the challenges of being part of the continued development and success of the program in whatever capacity needed by Coach Tobias and the people involved in WSU soccer.'

Married to Olga, Potter has three stepdaughters, Marissa, Andrea, and Valerie, and a daughter, Cassidy.
