UCLA Women Compete at LA Invitational Indoor T & F Meet

The UCLA Bruins will have a strong representation in the women's events at the 43rd annual Los Angeles Invitational indoor track meet, Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Sports Arena.
The LA Invitational indoor track meet is the nation's second oldest undercover meet. The classic meet will embrace its usual formula of world class events, collegiate standouts and nearly 2000 high school athletes from 500 schools. The event is second only to the Millrose Games in New York among the nation's track meets in history. A total of 105 Olympic gold medalists and dozens of world and American record holders have competed over the years, in the L.A. Invitational.
Jeanette Bolden, coach of the 2002 NCAA Outdoor women's runner up UCLA squad has entered a strong team that includes senior Tiffany Burgess, one of the nation's top collegiate half-milers and in the pole vault, freshman Chelsea Johnson, who was the country's No. 1 prep high school pole vaulter last year, and teammates, sophomore Jamie Kolar, junior Gail Larsen and senior Karen Bewley. They will compete against Mel Mueller, the No. 3 all-time U. S. vaulter, and former multiple NCAA champion, Bruin great Tracy O'Hara. UCLA junior Sani Roseby and freshman Dawn Harper will compete in the women's 55-meter dash; freshman Alejandra Barrientos, junior Melissa McBain and sophomore Valerie Flores will compete in the mile; junior Sheena Johnson, freshman Candice Baucham, former UCLA standout Michelle Perry and Roseby are entered inthe long jump; Baucham and Johnson will compete in the triple jump; andsenior Julie Stevenson, junior Caroline Summers and Perry will participate in the highjump.

Last Week/at United Heritage Invitational, Boise, ID
On Feb. 7-8, UCLA competed at the United Heritage Invitational Indoor T & F meet, hosted by Boise State.
On the track, the Bruin women were led by three individual event winners. In the mile, junior Melissa McBain won with a time of 5:00.73; sophomore Valerie Flores won the 3000m (10:10.14) and sophomore Carmen Winant took the 5000m title (18:00.72).
Other top performances were turned in by sophomore sprinter T'Carra Penick, who placed fifth in the 200m (25.08) and third in the 400m (57.14); sophomore Carolyn Shea who was second in the 300m (10:19.40) and sophomore Lori Mann, who was second in the 500m (18:04.99).
In the field, the Bruins had one event winner - senior Julie Stevenson won the high jump (5-8.75).
Also placing well for UCLA were - in the pole vault, freshman Chelsea Johnson, was second (12-9.50) and junior Gail Larsen tied for third (12-2); in the shot put, junior Jessica Cosby, the defending NCAA Outdoor champion, was fourth overall (second collegian/52-8) and sophomore Briona Reynolds was fifth (50-8.75) and in the 20lb. weight throw, junior Cari Soong was second (62-7.75), sophomore Lara Saye placed fifth (55-5) and Cosby was sixth (54-4.75).
On Feb. 21-22, the Bruins will again travel to Boise, ID to compete in the 2003 MPSF Indoor T & F Championships.
Other important Indoor dates include - Feb. 28-March 2-USA T & F Indoor Championships in Boston; March 8-last chance qualifying meet in Seattle and March 14-15 at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Outdoors, UCLA's first 2003 home meet at Drake Stadium will be Saturday, March 1, hosting Cal Poly-SLO and CS Los Angeles.
