Baseball Games In Surprise Still On Despite Heavy Rain In Phoenix
Feb. 14, 2003
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Despite the heavy rains that saw as much as 2-inches fall in some areas of the Valley last night, the two games to open the inaugural Coca-Cola College Baseball Classic in Surprise are planned to start at their normal times. Oklahoma State (1-1) will battle Oregon State (1-2) at 3 p.m. and No. 5 Arizona State (14-1) will take on Gonzaga (0-0) at 7p.m. All games are played at Surprise Stadium, the new spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.
As of 8 a.m. this morning there was no standing water in the outfield due to a state-of-the-art 18-inch rooted drainage system. A full grounds crew will work on the warning track and the infield (which has been tarped since early yesterday) throughout the day. The weather forecast for the West Valley calls for overcast skies, but no rain is in sight. Fans wishing for a field update can call a special weekend weather hotline that will be updated as events change. The phone number is 480-727-7253.
