Cal Baseball Pounds Texas-Pan American, 20-5
Feb. 14, 2003
Round Rock, TX - Cal scored 20 runs on 16 hits, including two home runs apiece by junior right fielder Brian Horwitz and sophomore first baseman James Holder, defeating Texas-Pan American, 20-5, Friday at the Express College Classic in Round Rock, Texas. The Bears have now won six games in-a-row to improve their record to 7-2, while the Broncs fell to 4-3.
Cal's 20 runs is the most runs the Bears have scored in a game since defeating Arizona, 24-14, Mar. 19, 2000 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. Horwitz finished the day a perfect 4-for-4, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning, a three-run homer in the third inning and a three-run double in the fourth inning. His eight RBI tied a school record for most RBI in a single game with Dan McInerny, who on Mar. 13, 1979 hit two grand slams versus Saint Mary's.
Cal's impressive run-scoring attack began when Holder hit a three-run homer in the second inning off of TPA's starting pitcher Jason Duhon (0-1, 2.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, one walk) that traveled around 420 feet before hitting a sign far past the 325 left field fence. The Bears ended up scoring six runs in the second inning, seven runs in the third inning with the help of a three-run homer by Horwitz and a solo homer by Conor Jackson, five runs in the fourth inning and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The game ended up being called after the top of the seventh inning due to the Classic's 10-run rule.
The winning pitcher for Cal was junior right-hander Matt Brown (1-0), who pitched 5.0 innings with six hits, five runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Junior right-hander Blake Read pitched the final 2.0 innings (two hits, no runs, no walks, one strikeout).
Besides Horwitz's exploits, Holder finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, and freshman shortstop Allen Craig, who has hit safely in every game this season, went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
The Bears will next face Southwest Texas State Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. and Nebraska Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. Central Standard Time. Nebraska defeated Southwest Texas State, 9-6 Friday, in the first game of the Express College Classic.

Cal: Holder, three-run homer in the second inning; Horwitz, two-run homer in the second inning; Horwitz, three-run homer in the third inning; C. Jackson, solo home run in the third inning; Holder, solo home run in the fifth inning.
