Feb. 14, 2003
LOS ANGELES -- Junior guard Rometra Craig contributed a game-high 17 points as the USC women's basketball team defeated Arizona State 64-56 on Friday night at the Sports Arena. The win marks the program's 500th all-time victory (500-288).
The Women of Troy have now won their last six-of-seven games to even their record at 12-12 overall, while improving to 7-6 in the Pac-10 (their first winning mark in conference play this season). The Sun Devils fall to 14-9 overall and 6-8 in the Pac-10.
Craig and sophomore forward Rachel Woodward, who added 14 points, were the only two to finish in double figures for the Trojans. Junior Ebony Hoffman led with nine rebounds. Arizona State was led by guard Carrie Buckner, who finished with 12 points, and forward Amy Denson, who posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Women of Troy had 16 turnovers in the game, but forced ASU to commit 25 of their own. USC shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field and 50.0 percent (3-6) from three-point range, while the Sun Devils tallied a 47.2 percentage (25-53) from the field and 9.1 percentage (1-11) from outside the arch.
After a lackluster first-half performance, the Women of Troy knotted the score within the first minute of the second half, 21-21, and began to hit their stride. The two teams paced each other until the 15-minute mark when the Trojans embarked on a 24-13 run that would put them up by 11 (53-42) with 8:20 remaining. Arizona State managed to cut the lead to one, 57-56 at 3:17, with a 14-4 run of their own, but the Sun Devils would come no closer. USC made five-of-six free throws down the stretch to secure the 64-56 victory.
Arizona State led 21-19 at the half.
The Women of Troy return to action this Sunday, Feb. 16, when they face No. 24 Arizona at 2 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
