Beavers Gain Ground In Hawai'i
Feb. 15, 2003
WAIKOLOA, Haw. - Oregon State jumped five places in the team standings on the second day of the TaylorMade Intercollegiate men's golf tournament on Thursday. Daren Grieg shot a 3-under-par 67 and Kenny Coakley a 2-under 68 as the Beavers moved from a tie for 22nd place up to a tie for 17th place in the 26-team field.
OSU shot a 3-under 277 as a team on Thursday, playing the par-70 Beach course. The tournament concludes Friday, with all teams playing the par-72 Kings course. Going into the final round, UCLA was the team leader and Adam Meyer of Texas Christian was the individual leader.
'We got off to a better start today,' OSU head coach Brian Watts said after the Beavers' round on Thursday. 'Unfortunately, we had to count a triple-bogey and a quadruple-bogey on No. 4 ... I was proud of the guys; unfortunately, we made two mental mistakes and they cost us a lot of shots. But we hung in there and fought hard to get back to even-par (for the round), and we finished strong.'
Michael Jurgensen is the highest-placing Beaver after two rounds, as his even-par 70 on Thursday left him in a tie for 28th place at 142. Chance Holmes is two strokes back in a tie for 48th. Grieg and Coakley are tied for 60th and 88th, respectively, after their strong rounds on Thursday.
'Darin played solid all day and Kenny played awesome,' Watts said. 'Unfortunately, Kenny missed probably nine putts that were within 10 feet or his round could have been extremely low.'
