Bruins Defeat Wahine, 10-2 in six innings

HENDERSON, NV - UCLA opened its day of play at the UNLV Classic with a 10-2 six-inning victory over Hawai'i on Saturday at Craig Park in Henderson, NV. Michelle Turner earned the victory for UCLA, as Tairia Mims went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run, while Caitlin Benyi went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. The Bruins improve to 8-1 with the win, while Hawai'i falls to 3-4 with the loss.

Stephanie Ramos provided the first hit of the game for the Bruins, a two-out double that bounced off the top of the center field fence and back into play. She would score as Tairia Mims tripled down the right field line, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Wahine threatened in the top of the second inning, as Kate Judd led off with a single to center. The Bruins unsuccessfully tried for the runner on a sacrifice bunt by Trisha Ramos. Denise Dahlberg attempted to sacrifice the pair to second and third, but popped out on a diving catch by Toria Auelua, giving the Bruins their first out of the inning. A walk to Ashley Ruff loaded the bases, but the Bruins were able to get their second out of the inning when Emily Zaplatosch fielded a slow ground ball and tossed it to Tairia Mims to get the out at the plate. Hannah Butler would end the inning, grounding out to UCLA second baseman Monique Mejia to end the inning.

UCLA posted another run in the second inning, as Emily Zaplatosch drew a one-out walk, and advanced to second on a single by Andrea Duran before being replaced for pinch runner Amanda Simpson. Simpson would score on a double to right by Caitlin Benyi to give UCLA the 2-0 lead.

The top of the third inning saw the Wahine tie the score on back-to-back home runs by April Crowell and Stacey Porter, tying the score at 2-2. However, the Bruins came back in the bottom of the frame to re-take the lead.

Stephanie Ramos led off the inning by reaching on an error by UH second baseman Ashley Ruff, and advanced on a single by Tairia Mims. Ramos would score and Mims advanced to third on a long fly ball to right field hit by Claire Sua. After two ground-outs, Andrea Duran delivered for the Bruins with a single to right, scoring Mims and advancing pinch-runner Julie Hoshizaki to third base. Duran and Hoshizaki would then score on a double by Caitlin Benyi, giving the Bruins a 6-2 lead.

In the fifth, Zaplatosch started the Bruin rally with a one-out single. She was out on a fielders choice, leaving Duran on first base. She would advance to second when Benyi was hit by a pitch. Both would then score on double by Natasha Watley moving the score to 8-2 UCLA.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, a solo home run by Tairia Mims off of relief pitcher Paula Blanning pushed the score to 9-2. After a single from Claire Sua, a walk by Auelua and a single from Zaplatosch, the bases were loaded, but the Wahine recorded a fielders choice out at the plate before a bases-loaded single by Caitlin Benyi scored Auelua to end the game with a score of 10-2 after six innings.

Michelle Turner earned the win for the Bruins, improving to 2-0 on the season. Turner struck out three and allowed four hits in the win. UCLA returns to action this afternoon with a scheduled 4:30 pm first pitch against No. 4 Nebraska.
