Feb. 15, 2003

Round Rock, TX - Southwest Texas State's Marc Cole hit a RBI single to left field off of Cal freshman reliever Adam Gold in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the Bobcats to a 6-5 victory over the Bears Saturday at the Express College Classic in Round Rock, Texas. Cal fell to 7-3 overall, while Southwest Texas State improved to 3-5.

Both teams had several chances to win the game before the 13th inning. In the bottom of the 11th, Bear sophomore Jesse Ingram got Cory Covert to hit into a double play with one out and the bases loaded. Cal followed by scoring a run in the top of the 12th inning to take a 5-4 lead when pinch runner Brad Smith scored on a wild pitch by Bobcat reliever Nick Lankford. Cal went down in order in the top of 13th inning against Southwest Texas State reliever Chris Jean (1-0, 1.7 innings, no hits, no runs, no walks, three strikeouts). In the bottom of the 13th, Swick gave up a two-out single to Jacob Spencer and then walked Corvert, before Gold came in and gave up the game-winning hit to Cole.

Junior designated hitter Conor Jackson led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Jackson had a key one-out double in the 12th for Cal. Brian Horwitz, Chris Grossman and Justin Nelson added two hits apiece for the Bears. Nelson had hit a solo home run in the second inning to put Cal on the scoreboard first.

The Bears will next take on Nebraska, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. CST in the final day of the Express College Classic.
