Men's Tennis Defeats Clemson In First Round of Great Northwest Shootout

Seattle, Wash. - No. 12 Washington men's tennis (7-0) rolled to its seventh-straight victory, defeating No. 37 Clemson, in the first day of the Great Northwest Shootout at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash., Saturday afternoon. The Huskies are set to face No. 27 Tulane on Sunday at 2p.m. for the championship showdown. Tulane defeated No. 33 San Diego State, 4-3, in the first match of the day.

The Huskies clinched five of the six singles matches and won two of the three doubles matches to take care of the Tigers. Sophomore Alex Vlaski, ranked 5th in the nation and playing in No. 1 singles position, led the Huskies with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Clemson's Nathan Thompson. Senior Matt Hanlin, ranked 11th in the nation, defeated Sander Koning in the No. 2 singles position, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 3 singles position, senior Ari Strasberg defeated Clemson's Jarmaine Jenkins 6-2, 6-2.

Also winning singles matches for Washington were sophomore Christoph Palmanshofer over Micah Thompson,7-6, 6-3 and sophomore Peter Scharler over John Boetsch, 6-3, 7-6. Senior Dillon Ruby fell to Clemson's Damiisa Robinson, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Hanlin and Ruby defeated Damiisa Robinson and Ash Misquith 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Fred Sundsten and junior Nick Weiss paired to defeat Koning and John Boetsch 8-2. UW's No.1doubles tandem of Strasberg and Vlaski fell to Clemson's Thompson and Jenkins, 8-6.

The Huskies return to the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2pm to face off against the Tulane Green Wave in the championship match Great Northwest Shootout. The Clemson Tigers will also face off against the San Diego State Aztecs at 10:30 a.m.
