Men's Tennis Rolls Over Boise State
Feb. 15, 2003
EUGENE - The No. 69 Oregon men's tennis team swept its second-straight opponent, this time No. 75 Boise State, at the Student Tennis Center Saturday. The Ducks have now won five straight matches and improve their overall record to 5-1.
'We beat a good team today,' Oregon head coach Chris Russell said. 'Boise State is going to beat some good teams this year. The key thing is we're getting better and we're seeing improvement.'
Oregon got things going in doubles play, where the Ducks won all three matches. Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig improved to 5-1 at the No. 1 spot by knocking off the No. 42-ranked tandem of Marcus Berntson and Guillaume Bouvier, 8-6. Jason Menke and Arron Spencer won at No. 2, 8-4, while Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost won at No. 3, 8-5.
The Broncos battled hard in singles action, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Ducks. Bieri was first off the court at No. 4 by defeating Mahmoud Rezk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Teig won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2, to bring him within one of the Oregon record for career singles victories.
The final four matches on the court all went to three sets, with two of them ending in third-set tiebreakers. Menke clinched the team win for the Ducks at No. 6 by storming back after losing the first set, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. No. 64-ranked Manuel Kost played at the No. 1 position for the first time this year, defeating Berntson, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Kost, who appears to be fully recovered from a previous abdominal injury, has not lost in dual action this season.
Swinnen scored Oregon's sixth point at the No. 3 position by defeating No. 86 Bouvier, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9). Swinnen fought off a couple match points in the tiebreaker before picking up the win. Spencer played the third set with a sore ankle, but still was able to come out on top at No. 5, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Spencer joins Bieri and Kost as the only Ducks who have yet to lose in singles play during the dual season.
Oregon will host Pacific and UC Santa Barbara at the Student Tennis Center next weekend.
