No. 6 Softball Downs Northwestern, 2-1

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 6 Washington softball team (9-0) defeated Northwestern (4-3), 2-1, Saturday in day two of the Arizona Pepsi Classic.
The Huskies manufactured a run in the bottom of the third inning on a hit and a stolen base. Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) kicked off the inning with a hit to center field and advanced to third on a ground out and a passed ball. Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and third. Clark stole second base and drew the throw, allowing Owen to score and put Washington up, 1-0.
Northwestern tied the score at one in the top of the fifth on four hits. With one out, NU notched back-to-back singles resulting in Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) relieving starter Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) on the mound. The Wildcats proceeded to load the bases with an infield single. The Huskies got the second out with a force at home by Bollinger. With the bases still loaded and two out, Kristen Amegin hit a single into left field, scoring Brett Nakabayashi. Erin Mobley also tried to score on the play but was picked at the plate by left fielder Dena Tyson (Corona, Calif.) to get Washington out of the inning.
UW regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on two hits. Owen opened the inning with a single to centerfield and advanced to third on a ground out and a fly ball to center field. Clark then delivered the game-winner with a drive to center that scored Owen to put Washington on top 2-1.
Bollinger closed out the game with three ground outs to preserve the win. She scattered three hits over 2.2 innings and struck out one. Boek tallied six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work for the Huskies.
Washington makes its final appearance in the Arizona Pepsi Challenge with a 1 p.m. game against Minnesota on Sunday.
