Record Falls At Nebraska Invite

Feb 15, 2003

The University of Colorado track & field team sent the bulk of the squad to compete at the University of Nebraska's Frank Sevigne Invitational here Saturday. The Buffaloes' Natalie Florence and Casey Burchill were CU's top finishers, both taking second in the 3,000 run, while freshman Mary French set a CU record for indoor pole vault.

Florence, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., ran Colorado's first NCAA provisional time of the year, a mark of 9:29.19 in the 3,000 meters. She was not the only NCAA provisional qualifier on the women's team, as seniorBrianna Torres also ran a strong time in the 5,000 meters, taking fourth place in a time of 16:35.74.

French, a native of Colorado Springs, set a new CU record with her pole vault of 11-2.50. The previous best was 11-0.25, set by Megan Buttner in 2001 at the Big12 indoor championships.

Burchill, a freshman from Clovis, Calif., was second in the men's 3,000 with a strong time of 8:24.60. Other men's top five finishers included Bryan Dillon in the mile run (5th, 4:12.96), and Jon Severy (4th, 14:33.35) and Andy Knutsen (5th, 14:36.15).

Colorado will be in action again next weekend, as the Buffs compete at the Air Force Open in Colorado Springs.
