Ten Run Inning Spurs Bruins on to 12-5 Win Over NC State

Feb. 15, 2003

A ten run fourth inning, which was highlighted by a Ryan McCarthy grand slam, led the UCLA baseball team to a 12-5 victory over North Carolina State (2-2) on Saturday afternoon in front of 364 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

A two-RBI double from Jeremy Dutton got the scoring started and put the Wolfpack ahead 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning.

The Bruins dropped the lead to one in the bottom of the second. After a Billy Susdorf fly-out, Chris Denove hit a double to right center. Designated hitter Brandon Averill moved Denove to third with a single to right field. Matt Thayer brought Denove across the plate on a sacrifice fly. At the end of two, UCLA trailed 2-1.

The Wolfpack lead would not last long however, as a ten-run fourth inning would put the Bruins out of reach. Wolfpack starter Nate Cretarolo, issued a one-out walk to Thayer put the first Bruin base runner on in the inning. He stole second and scored on a single from Ryan McCarthy. Sean Carpenter brought McCarthy home with his own single. After Preston Griffin popped up to the catcher, Carpenter stole second and scored on a Kevin Conlin single to right. Wes Whisler followed with a walk, which moved Conlin to second. The bases would be cleared; however, as Susdorf hit his third home run of the season to put UCLA ahead 7-2. Another double from Denove, a walk to Averill and Thayer reaching after being hit by a pitch kept the two-out rally alive. McCarthy would stretch the UCLA lead to nine with his first career grand slam. At the end of four, UCLA led 11-2.

Catcher Jeff Abney, in only his third career at-bat, would add an exclamation point to the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Wolfpack home runs from Colt Morton and Jeremy Dutton would put more runs on the board, but they could not catch up to the Bruins.

Bruin starter Casey Janssen earned the win allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out five in six innings of work.

Garett White relieved Janssen and allowed one run on one hit in one inning, Senior Kevin Jerkens pitched the eighth inning for UCLA , also allowing one run on one hit and struck out two batters. Mike Castillo finished the game, pitching the ninth and not allowing a hit.

McCarthy finished the game three-for -three with a career-high five RBI and two runs scored.

The last game of the three game series will start tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Left-hander Wes Whisler will start for the Bruins against Wolfpack right-hander Vern Sterry.
