UCLA Downs Fourth Ranked Nebraska, 5-1

HENDERSON, NV - The Bruin softball team knocked Nebraska from the ranks of the undefeated on Saturday night at the UNLV Classic, defeating the Huskers 5-1. Keira Goerl celebrated her birthday in style, striking out nine and allowing just four hits in the game. With the win, the Bruins improve to 9-1 on the season, while Nebraska falls to 8-1.
A Tairia Mims home run gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but UCLA broke the game open in the sixth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Mims led off with a double to right field, her second extra-base hit of the game. A ground out by Claire Sua advanced Mims to third, and she came home on a double to left by Toria Auelua. After a walk to Emily Zaplatosch, Andrea Duran singled Auelua home and advanced pinch-runner Julie Hoshizaki to second base. UCLA's first five hits of the game were for extra bases.
Caitlin Benyi put a single between the first baseman and the bag to load the bases, and Natasha Watley used an infield single to add a fourth run to UCLA's lead. Stephanie Ramos completed UCLA's scoring with an RBI single to left, scoring Benyi.
Keira Goerl was impressive in the circle for UCLA, striking out nine and allowing just four hits while issuing one walk.
UCLA completes its weekend schedule on Sunday with a 2 pm game against Utah
