UW Baseball Falls At Loyola Marymount, 5-3
Feb. 15, 2003
LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team had its modest three-game winning streak snapped Saturday as starting pitcher Vince Cordova led Loyola Marymount to a 5-3 win at Page Stadium. The LMU win tied the three-game, non-conference series at one win apiece.
Cordova (1-0), a junior righty, held the Huskies to only one unearned run on four hits. He walked two and struck out five over his six innings of work. Freshman Stephen Kahn allowed a solo homer to Husky junior Mike Wagner to lead off the ninth, but finished the game to get the save.
The win was the Lions' first of the year as they improved to 1-4. Washington, which had won three straight since falling 1-0 to Pepperdine in the opener, dropped to 3-2 on the season.
Husky starter Clay Johnson (1-1), who held No. 11 Houston to one run in a win last weekend, gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out four over five innings to take the loss.
LMU opened the scoring in the second inning. Joshua Whitesell led off with a double and eventually came around on a Sean Smith sacrifice fly. Carl Stoeber, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a bloop single from third baseman Kyle Mura and the Lions led 2-0 after two innings.
Loyola tacked on two more in the third to extend its lead to 4-0. Catcher Jonathan Higashi singled and scored on a base hit from Stoeber while Whitesell was hit by a pitch and eventually came around when Smith blooped a single down the left-field line.
The Huskies broke through in the sixth. Senior shortstop Tila Reynolds led off by being hit by a pitch. After moving to third on a single and a double-play groundout, he scored on a two-out passed ball. In the seventh, Reynolds' younger brother Simi, a freshman center fielder, drove in Greg Isaacson with a double, Simi's third hit of the day, cutting LMU's advantage to 4-2.
Loyola padded its lead with a fifth run in the seventh. Higashi walked to lead off, moved to third on a single and scored when Sean Smith beat out a two-out, infield single.
Wagner's ninth-inning homer was his second of the season and second in as many games at LMU. Simi Reynolds finished 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Huskies and Lions close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
