Wildcats Tally 15 Hits In Win Over Florida International

TUCSON - Top-ranked Arizona (11-1) overcame a sloppy four-error defensiveeffort with 15 hits, and Alicia Hollowell earned her first save with ashort relief effort to help the Cats earn a 6-3 victory over FloridaInternational in UA's Pepsi Softball Classic Saturday evening.
Florida International (4-9) scored an unearned run in the bottom of thefirst to take a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Walker led off with a double toleft-center, moved to third on Nicole Duboviks's sacrifice bunt and scoredwith two outs when UA shortstop Lovie Jung mishandled a grounder by MarleahStapf.
Jackie Coburn lined her third home run of the season over the left fieldfence after a single by Wendy Allen in the top of the second to giveArizona a 2-1 lead. The Cats pushed it to 3-1 in the third when Jungdoubled to center and Mackenzie Vandergeest singled to left-center for theRBI.
The Golden Panthers cut it to 3-2 with an unearned run in the third.Dobovik singled, stole second and then scored when Stapf singled to leftand Autumn Champion's throw back to the infield sailed wide on the cut-offplay.
Vandergeest doubled to lead off the fifth and moved to third on a singleby Wendy Allen, who reached second on a throw to the plate. UA firstbaseman Erin Palomarez collected her first career hit, a bloop single toleft, to drive in both runners and extend the score to 5-2.
FIU cut it to 5-3 in the sixth on Walker's RBI single, but UA relieverHollowell came in with two runners on and struck out Dubovik to end thethreat. She set down the side in the seventh.
Leadoff hitter Champion, a lefty slapper, had four singles to pace UA'sattack.
