Feb. 16, 2003

HOUSTON, Texas - Husky freshman Travis Boyd placed 17th Sunday in the U.S. Junior National Cross-Country Championships at Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park, leading a pack of three Washington runners among the top-40 finishers. The meet determined qualifying for March's World Cross-Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the top six finishers in each race making the U.S. squad.

Boyd's time of 28 minutes, 25 seconds on the rain-soaked 8,078-meter course trailed by over a minute the winning time of 27:08 by Colorado's Bill Nelson. Joining Boyd, a graduate of Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, Wash., were fellow freshmen Mike Sayenko and Jon Hickey. Sayenko, of Bellevue's Sammamish High School, placed 22nd in 28:53, while Hickey, a Hanford (Wash.) High School graduate, was 37th in 30:08.

Also competing Sunday was first-year Husky assistant coach Kelly MacDonald, who placed 12th overall in the 4,148-meter U.S. women's race. A five-time All-American and three-time Pac-10 Champion at Arizona State University, MacDonald completed the course in 15:52, less than a minute behind winner Shayne Culpepper, who finished in 15:10.

On Saturday, Washington freshman Laura Hodgson earned a spot on the U.S. junior women's national team with a second-place finish in the U.S. junior women's race. Hodgson will join five others in representing the United States at the World Cross-Country Championships, Mar. 29-30, in Lausanne, Switzerland.
