No. 3 Cal Edged by Hawaii, 1-0
Feb. 16, 2003
Senior Jen Deering and sophomore Kelly Anderson combined for a no-hitter, yet Hawaii squeaked by No. 3 California, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the final day of the UNLV Tournament. The Golden Bears fall to 10-2 on the season, fielding a 3-2 record at the UNLV Tournament, as the Rainbow Wahine improve to 5-5 for the year (3-2 at UNLV).
Senior Jen Deering took her first loss of the season (4-1, 2.2 innings, one run, four walks, three strikeouts), relieved by Kelly Anderson in the third. Anderson tossed 4.1 perfect innings while striking out three. Melissa Coogan picked up the win for Hawaii, improving her record to 3-2 as Cal scattered four hits of her.
The Hawaii Wahine scored the game-winning run in the third, capitalizing off a Cal error. After Deering walked two and struck out two, Hawaii's April Crowell hit a soft grounder to first base, reaching on a throwing error and scoring the runner from second. Deering walked one more batter before Anderson came in for relief, collecting the third out.
Cal looked for a potential run in the bottom of the second, with runners at the corners and the suicide squeeze on. The squeeze failed as Courtney Scott was unable to connect with the ball allowing Hawaii's catcher to tag out Vicky Galindo running towards the plate.
The Bears hit the road again for the second of six consecutive weekend tournaments, traveling to Columbus, GA for the NFCA Leadoff Classic. On Friday, Feb. 21 Cal faces Alabama at 2:30 p.m. and Notre Dame at 5 p.m. at the three-day 24-team tournament.
