Giuliana Mendiola Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player Of The Week
Feb. 17, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- WASHINGTON junior guard Giuliana Mendiola has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Mendiola, from Lake Forest, Calif., averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds as the Huskies defeated No. 6 Stanford and California. On the weekend, she shot 66.7 percent from the field (12-of-18), 66.7 percent from three-point range (4-of-6) and 77.8 percent from the foul line (7-of-9).
Mendiola was Washington's high scorer in the 92-68 upset of Stanford (Feb. 13), scoring 20 points and adding team highs of seven assists and five rebounds. She shot a red-hot 72.7 percent from the field (8-of-11) and drained four of her five three-point attempts (80.0 percent) on the night. The 24-point margin of victory over the Cardinal was the second-largest for UW in the all-time series. The defeat was also Stanford's most lopsided since a 26-point loss to Oregon State on Mar. 9, 1991.
In the 74-54 win over California (Feb. 15), Mendiola scored 15 points and added four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Both victories extended the Huskies' home winning streak to 13 games and helped move them to within one and a half games of league leader Stanford.
Washington (19-5, 11-4 Pac-10), which was ranked 20th in the Feb. 3 Associated Press poll but dropped out in the Feb. 10 rankings, travels to Oregon State and Oregon this week.
The Player of the Week honor is the fourth for Mendiola, her third of the season and the 21st all-time selection for Washington.
