BERKELEY - The fourth-ranked University of California men's tennis team (4-0) continued its strong early season showing, improving to an undefeated 4-0 Saturday, easily besting visiting UC Santa Barbara at Hellman Tennis Complex, 6-1.
The Bears continued to showcase their depth, nearly sweeping the doubles courts to clinch the crucial point. Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress, working for the first time this season at the No. 1 court, downed the Gaucho combo Carlos Palencia and Mirco Schwindt, 8-5, to improve to a 5-0 record.
The Hungarian junior Veress continued his dominance over Palencia, dropping him at the No. 1 singles court in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In fact, the Bears swept the top five singles courts, with only one match extending into a third set.
