Next Up for the Cats
The No. 2 Arizona softball team (13-1) will host the Worth Invitational on Feb. 21-23. On Feb. 21, Arizona is scheduled to play Drake (5-1) at 3 p.m. and Oklahoma State (12-5) at 5 p.m. On Feb. 22, the Cats play Virginia (14-3) at 3 p.m. and Western Michigan (0-0) at 5 p.m. Arizona concludes the tournament with a game against New Mexico (1-4) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
Pepsi Arizona Classic
Last weekend, Arizona hosted the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic and ended the tournament with a 3-0 record. The Cats won 6-3 against Florida International, with the help of a home run by sophomore Jackie Coburn. A no-hitter by freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell helped Arizona to a 6-0 win over Minnesota. Two runs, three hits and three RBI by Coburn was enough to put the Cats up 9-1 against Arkansas.
In the Circle
Freshman Alicia Hollowell completed the weekend with a 2-0 record. Hollowell had her second career no-hitter against Minnesota. She also struck out 15 batters. In 13 innings pitched this weekend, Hollowell had a 0.53 ERA with one shut out. On the season, Hollowell has a 0.25 ERA. She has pitched 55 innings and has struck out 92 batters. Hollowell has a 7-1 record with five shutouts.
Pac-10 Player of the Week
Senior Lovie Jung was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for Feb. 3-9. In the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Jung had a .474 batting average, with five home runs, including one grand slam. Jung's three home runs against Iowa State ties the NCAA single game record. Currently, Jung leads the team with a .442 batting average. She leads the team in runs (16), doubles (6), triples (1) and RBI (21).
ASA Player of the Year Nominees
Lovie Jung, Mackenzie Vandergeest and Alicia Hollowell are among 40 players named to the initial 'watch list' for USA Collegiate Player of the Year by the Amateur Softball Association. The ASA gave its first award last season to UCLA's Stacey Nuveman.
Arizona's Mike Candrea carries a career record of 939-185 (.835), accomplished in 17 years with the Wildcats. The 2002 Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year has led UA to six national titles and six Pacific-10 Conference championships. Last season, hebecame only the third Division I coach in history to win 900 games. During his tenure, Wildcat student-athletes have won the Honda Softball Award fives times (Susie Parra-1994, Jenny Dalton-1996, Nancy Evans-1998, Jennie Finch-2001, 2002).Candrea's Arizona teams have played in 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 15 consecutive College World Series. Last season, Candrea's team made it to the College World Series Championship game before losing to California, 6-0. Candrea is joined by assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Larry Ray.
UA carries a record of 313-18 in Hillenbrand Stadium. The Cats had an average attendance of 1,755 and drew in a total of 49,140 in 2002. Arizona set an attendance record of 3,161 fans on April 9, 2002 against UCLA. Arizona had a three-season 70-game home winning streak snapped by UCLA on April 7, 2002.
Going, Going, Gone
Arizona has hit 18 home runs in 14 games this season, including three grand slams. Lovie Jung leads the way with eight home runs and one grand slam. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest is second with three home runs and one grand slam. Last year's team hit 93 home runs with 13 grand slams.
