Bruin Men Compete at 2003 MPSF Indoor T & F Meet This Weekend at Boise State

Art Venegas' Bruin men's track & field team will compete this weekend (Feb. 21-22) at the 2003 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boise State. The meet will take place at the Jackson Foods Track in the Idaho Sports Center. The meet starts Friday at 11 a.m. PT and Saturday at 9 a.m. PT.
Along with UCLA, teams competing for the women's and men's title include California, CS Northridge, Idaho, Long Beach State, Stanford, Utah State, Washington State, Cal Poly, Oregon and UC Irvine. In the men's team competition, the only squad nationally ranked is No. 6 Stanford.
At last season's MPSF, the Bruin men won the team title and Venegas was named the Men's MPSF Coach of the Year.

On the track, UCLA has one event leader-Thornton in the 800m (1:50.28). Also expected to score for the Bruins are - freshman Matt Bruno (No. 4 in the 60m, 6.82; No. 3 in the 200m, 21.76); sophomore Denye Versher (No. 2, 47.61) and freshman Craig Everhart (No. 3, 47.91) in the 400m and sophomore Martell Munguia (No. 3 in the 800m, 1:50.78), along with the Bruins' distance medley relay (No. 3, 9:52.70) and 4 X 400m relay (No. 3, 3:14.61).
In the field, the Bruin men will be led by junior Dan Ames, who leads the 35lb. weight throw (NCAA automatic 63-3.25) and is No. 2 in the shot put (NCAA provisional 63-3.25). Other top performers for UCLA include - in the pole vault, sophomore Yoo Kim (No. 2, NCAA provisional 17-4.50) and junior Pat Luke (No. 3, 16-10.75); Armon in the long jump (No. 2, 24-2.50) and in the shot put, senior Scott Wiegand (No. 4, NCAA provisional 61-2.25) and freshmen, Jeremy Silverman (No. 6, NCAA provisional 59-0) and Jake Knight (No. 7, 57-9.75).
Last Saturday (Feb. 15), several Bruins competed at the 43rd annual Los Angeles Invitational at the Sports Arena.

In the mile, sophomore Ben Aragon placed third (4:14.22) and sophomore Erik Emilsson was fourth (4:15.28). In the 800m, Thornton was the top placing collegian (1:51.98), followed by senior Phil Young (1:53.50) and Munguia was fifth overall (1:57.43). The 800m race was won by Bruin great Jess Strutzel, who during his Bruin career won two NCAA Indoor titles (1999 DMR; 2000 800m).
Indoors, there is a last chance collegiate indoor meet in Seattle, WA on March 8 and from March 14-15, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville will host the 2003 NCAA Indoor T & F Championships.
Outdoors, UCLA will host its first home meet of the season at Drake Stadium on Saturday, March 1, a quadrangular meet with Cal Poly-SLO, CS Fullerton and CS Los Angeles. The women and men's hammer throws will start at 9 a.m., followed by the rest of the field events, beginning at 11 a.m. The running events will start at 12:30 p.m. and conclude with the 4 X 400m relays at 3:55 p.m.
